Qi Zhu

Dr. Qi Zhu is a Full Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Northwestern University. He earned his Ph.D. in EECS from the University of California, Berkeley in 2008 and a B.E. in CS from Tsinghua University in 2003. His recent research focuses on building safe, secure, and trustworthy embodied AI systems, with efforts in formal safety verification and robustness certification, safety-assured learning and system design, safety and security analysis for foundation model-driven embodied agents, continual learning, federated learning, and multimodal time-series learning. His earlier work centers on design automation for cyber-physical systems (CPS), cyber-physical security, energy-efficient CPS, and system-on-chip design. Dr. Zhu has published over 170 papers in major conferences and journals, and earned best paper awards at leading venues, including DAC (2006, 2007), ICCPS (2013), ACM TODAES (2016), and DATE (2022). He received the NSF CAREER Award, the IEEE TCCPS Early-Career Award, the Humboldt Research Fellowship for Experienced Researchers, and was selected to attend the National Academy of Engineering’s US Frontiers of Engineering Symposium. Dr. Zhu currently serves as the VP of Publicity for the IEEE Council on Electronic Design Automation (CEDA), Conference Chair for the IEEE Technical Committee on CPS (TCCPS), Founding Co-Chair for the IEEE Technical Committee on IoT in Intelligent Transportation Systems, and a member of the National Academies’ Standing Committee on Personal Protective Equipment for Workplace Safety and Health. He is an Associate Editor for IEEE TCAD, IEEE TCASAI, ACM TCPS, and ACM TODAES, and served as a Guest Editor for the Proceedings of the IEEE, ACM TCPS, IEEE T-ASE, IEEE IoT Journal, Elsevier JSA, and Elsevier VLSI Integration. He also helped organize numerous conferences in various roles in the areas of design automation, embedded, real-time, and cyber-physical systems, formal methods, and machine learning.
